A guide for contractors, EPC & infrastructure firms
What drives surety bond pricing.
A surety bond has no fixed rate. Its price reflects the risk an insurer is taking on you, so understanding the drivers tells you far more than any headline number. Here is what moves the price, and the levers you can actually pull to be assessed more favourably.
Quick answer: A surety bond’s price reflects the risk the insurer is taking on you, not a fixed rate. The main drivers are your financial strength and credit quality, your delivery track record, the bond type and tenure, and the nature of the underlying contract. Stronger fundamentals mean a lower charge, and the levers you can actually pull are how clearly you present those fundamentals.
What determines the price of a surety bond?
There is no fixed rate for a surety bond. The insurer is pricing the risk that you will not perform, so anything that lowers that risk in their eyes lowers the charge. Four factors do most of the work.
| Factor | What the insurer is reading | In your control? |
|---|---|---|
| Financial strength | Balance-sheet health and credit quality | Partly, over time |
| Track record | Completed projects and delivery history | Yes, present it well |
| Bond type and tenure | The promise being backed and for how long | Set by the contract |
| The contract itself | The owner, the scope and the risk in the work | Set by the tender |
This explains what moves pricing, not what any bond will cost. A specific figure comes only from underwriting your firm and your contract.
What can a contractor actually control?
You cannot change the contract overnight, but you can change how you come across to an underwriter. Contractors who approach underwriting prepared, with clean current financials, a documented delivery record and a correctly matched bond, tend to be assessed more favourably than firms with the same fundamentals and a messier file.
- Present clean, current financials. Up-to-date audited statements do more for your pricing than almost anything else you control.
- Document your track record. Completion certificates and work orders turn “trust me” into evidence.
- Match the bond to the stage. The right instrument for the requirement avoids a re-quote and the delay that comes with it.
- Work with someone who packages the case. How your file is presented to the insurer is itself a lever.
A surety premium is priced on the risk you represent, so the strongest lever you hold is how clearly you can show you are low risk.

Common questions
What are the typical rates for surety bonds?
There is no fixed rate. Pricing reflects your company's financial health, the project value and tenure, your company's age and your credit profile. Stronger financials generally earn better terms, and a specific figure comes only from underwriting.
Can I lower the price of my surety bond?
You can influence it. Clean, current financials, a well-documented delivery record and the correctly matched bond type all help an underwriter assess you as lower risk, which is what pricing reflects.
Why is my surety bond priced higher than another firm's?
Because the price reflects your risk, not a market rate. A different financial position, a shorter track record, a longer or riskier contract, or a less complete file can all move the price between two firms.
Is a surety bond cheaper than a bank guarantee?
The comparison that matters is not the fee but the capital. A bank guarantee locks collateral and consumes your credit line; a surety bond leaves that capital free, which is usually where the real saving sits.
The right bond is a conversation, not a form
