Personal Accident Insurance: What It Is and Whether You Need One

Personal accident insurance is the cover most people own without reading and skip when they should have it. Here is what it actually does, why your health and life policies don't replace it, and how to judge a policy before you buy.

An accident policy is the one cover nobody wants to think about, and the one your family remembers forever if it was there, or wasn't.

  • Personal accident insurance is a policy you buy that pays a fixed sum if an accident causes death or disability, to you or your family.
  • It does not reimburse your hospital bill — that is what health insurance does. It pays for what the accident leaves behind: lost income and capacity.
  • Your health and life policies do not replace it; they cover different things.
  • What matters is not just having it, but how it is built: the sum insured, the disability scale, 24x7 cover, and the exclusions.

In short: personal accident insurance is cover you take for yourself that pays a fixed benefit if an accident causes death or disability, independent of any policy your employer provides.

Most people first meet personal accident insurance as a small add on to a car or loan, tick it, and never look again. That is how you end up holding cover you have never read. If you are deciding whether you need your own personal accident insurance, this is the plain version.

What it pays for, and what it does not

A personal accident policy typically pays on four things: accidental death, permanent total disability, permanent partial disability, and temporary total disability. Some add accident related medical costs. It pays a set benefit for each, not the treatment cost, so it works alongside your health cover rather than repeating it.

The part people miss is the partial disability scale. Lose the use of a hand or an eye and the policy pays a fixed percentage of the sum insured, following a table in the wording, whatever the bill was. That scale is where two policies with the same headline cover behave very differently.

Why health and life cover don't replace it

Health insurance reimburses treatment. Life insurance pays on death from any cause. Personal accident cover pays a fixed benefit specifically when an accident causes death or disability, and crucially it pays for disability, which the other two largely do not. That is the gap it exists to fill.

Do you need it if your company already covers you?

Often, yes. Your employer's group accident cover protects the working version of you, but it ends the day you leave, the sum may be modest, and it rarely covers your family. A policy you own fills exactly those gaps. There is a fuller comparison in the group versus individual explainer linked below.

What to check before you buy

You do not need to be an expert to choose a personal accident policy well. You need to ask the right questions.

  1. Is the sum insured sized to your income?Enough to replace years of earnings, not a token figure.
  2. Does it cover partial and temporary disability? Not only death and total disability, which miss most real outcomes.
  3. What does the disability scale pay?Check the percentages for common partial losses.
  4. Is cover 24 hours and worldwide? An accident does not wait for working hours.
  5. What are the exclusions?Read them before you assume you're covered.
  6. Can you add family? And is that better as one plan or separate cover?

That is the test I would apply to any policy, or any broker selling you one, including us. The job is to help you read what you are actually buying, not to sell you the biggest number.

How a claim works

When you claim, you or your family file it and the insurer assesses it against the policy scale. The gap most people feel is not the payout, it is the wait and the paperwork at the worst possible moment, which is exactly where good help earns its keep. That is effort on your behalf, not a promise of any particular outcome.

Personal accident cover pays for what an accident leaves behind, not the bill your health plan already covers.

Common questions

Do I really need personal accident insurance?

If an accident causing disability would put your income or your family at risk, then yes. It covers exactly the outcomes health and life cover largely miss.

Isn't my company's cover enough?

It helps, but it ends when you leave, may be modest, and rarely covers family. Your own policy fills those gaps.

Does it cover accidents outside India?

Well built policies cover death and permanent disability worldwide, 24 hours. Medical benefits are often India only. Check the wording.

Does it pay on top of health insurance?

Yes. A fixed accident benefit generally pays regardless of what a health policy reimburses, because they cover different things.
