One wallet, eight cards — routed, tracked, tallied

The playbook, turned into a tool. The three things founders do often are one tap away — where do I swipe, have I hit a cap, and what’s the year worth. Pick a category, type the amount, and the console splits the payment across your cards on your live cap headroom, then logs it to the tracker in one tap. The full playbook is in Reference below.

An operating system for who pays, on which card, up to what cap — not financial advice. Indian card rules, caps, transfer partners and portal rates change constantly, so treat every percentage as an estimate and verify the live bank T&Cs before any large payment.

The tracker remembers your entries on this device. Update it before a big payment; hit New statement cycle when your cards bill.

Tap what you’re paying for. You’ll get the card, the rate, your live cap headroom, the one gotcha, and the runner-up — and for most categories, type the amount to see exactly how to split it.

Pick a category above to see the routing.

Log spend this cycle against each cap. Bars go amber near the limit and red when it’s full, with the switch to make. Different clocks — the anniversary caps aren’t cleared by New statement cycle.

Swap in your own monthly spend to see the shape of the year. This is a rough ceiling estimate at best-transfer values — it ignores per-card caps, so for the precise capped model see Reference → Planning model.

CategoryYour spend / monthRateEst. reward / year
Estimated reward / year — ceilingPoints-based lines carry a ~25% haircut in Realistic mode. For context, the sample-spend playbook tally is ~₹11.45L ceiling / plan to ~₹9L. Not a promise — actual value depends on live rules, caps, fees and how well you redeem.

Start with a worked example

Worked example — one payment, start to finish

You owe ₹1,20,000 in GST this month — here’s the method

1First ~₹50k → HDFC BizBlack at 5X — the 16.5% ceiling tranche, and the ~7,500-point cap lands right here. Earns ~₹8,250 in points.
2Next ~₹70k → the HSBC ₹1L tax bucket at 6% (via Accor). This beats BizBlack’s 3.33% base — the next slice always goes to the next-highest rate, not just “more BizBlack.” Earns ~₹4,200.
3Net the fee. The govt portal charges ~1% (+GST); ~45 days of interest-free float roughly cancels it, so the whole ₹1.2L costs ~₹0 net.

Result: ~₹12,000 at ceiling (~₹10,000 after a realistic haircut), at ~₹0 net cost. The method, not the numbers: slice the payment, send each slice to the next-best rate, watch the cap, net the fee. That’s the whole playbook in one transaction.

Valuation key — ceiling, not cash

Every % here is a ceiling. It assumes you transfer to the best partner and redeem well. For planning, haircut these 20–30%; for cash-out or poor award availability, more.

HSBC → Accor 1:1, Accor ≈ ₹1.8/pt (2,000 = €40). Base 3 pts/₹100 ≈ 5.4%; the app travel portal pushes flights to ~32% and hotels to ~65% — but only for stays at Accor properties (Sofitel, Novotel, Fairmont). If you prefer Taj or Oberoi, drop this value.

Amex MR → Marriott 1:1 ≈ ₹0.5–0.75/pt depending on the stay (airlines are 2:1). Drives the Platinum Charge rate.

Axis EDGE → airline miles, 5:4 ≈ ₹1/mile (Air India, KrisFlyer, Aeroplan, Flying Blue — the new partners BA / Finnair / Lotusmiles transfer at a weaker 5:2). Magnus is 4.8% below ₹1.5L/mo, 14% above.

ICICI EPM → iShop vouchers at best point value (gold ≈15%, groceries ≈18%) — live portal rates and voucher restrictions apply.

Run this before tax, ads, SaaS, travel or bulk vouchers

Five questions, in order

1. Is this category actually rewarded on the card, or excluded?

2. Has the monthly / statement-cycle cap already been hit?

3. What’s the real fee — gateway, forex, convenience or surcharge?

4. Will the invoice / GST / TDS / reimbursement trail stay clean?

5. Can you actually redeem the points at the value you’re assuming?

Don’t proceed if

Points aren’t worth an operational mess

Skip the card if it creates accounting confusion, risks a missed due date, leaves employee spend unreconciled, invites avoidable interest, or earns a redemption you won’t actually use.

Also step back when: cash flow is tight, a merchant may code the spend wrong (test small first), or the fee simply exceeds the reward. A clean transfer with no points beats a rewarded payment that creates a tax or cash-flow problem.

Four mistakes that quietly cost you
MistakeWhy it loses moneyDo instead
Dumping a full ₹10L tax month on one BizBlack cycleEverything past the 5X cap and your credit limit earns base or nothingFill 5X, then HSBC’s ₹1L bucket, then split across cycles
Swiping Amex at the fuel pumpThe ~1–2% surcharge eats the milestone valueCount it toward the milestone budget, not the swipe reward
Forcing the ₹7L Amex tier by moving Magnus spend−₹42k of miles to gain ~₹19k of milestoneLand at the ₹4L tier; feed only spend that earns ~0 elsewhere
Booking flights on the airline site with HSBCEarns base ~3%, not the ~32% portal rateBook inside the HSBC app portal
The plays that aren’t obvious

Tax · GST · TDS — at ₹10L / month

At this volume, most tax earns the base rate — that’s unavoidable

The rich slices are small next to ₹10L: BizBlack’s 5X caps at 7,500 pts (~₹50k, 16.5%), and HSBC takes only ₹1,00,000/month at 6% (its capped bucket, shared with insurance). The remaining ~₹8.75L/month earns BizBlack’s base 3.33%. Net of the payment-gateway fee (~0.85–1% + GST on the govt portals), the base slice is really ~2.3%, the HSBC slice ~5%, the 5X slice ~15.5%.

Two things soften the fee. If the gateway-fee invoice is raised to your GSTIN and the expense is eligible, the 18% GST on it may be reclaimable as ITC (confirm with your CA) — making the drag ~1% rather than 1.18%. And paying ~₹1.2 cr of tax on cards buys ~45 days of interest-free float, worth ~₹1.2L/yr in working capital, which roughly cancels the fee. But watch your BizBlack limit: spend above it has to go on a card that pays zero on government spend, so size the limit or split tax across cycles.

UPI + Airport privileges

Scapia — the airport credit, not the lounge

Route all UPI here and cross ₹20,000/cycle (Visa + RuPay spends combine) to unlock next month’s privileges. Ignore Scapia’s lounge — you already have unlimited lounges on Amex Charge, HSBC and Magnus. Use it strictly for the other option: up to ₹1,000 back per departure on airport dining/shopping at major metros (₹500 at smaller airports), one benefit per departure — ~₹30,000/year at 2–3 trips/month. Bonus: an international flight of ₹50,000+ booked in the Scapia app unlocks up to ₹2,000 at international terminals.

Don’t break the ₹20k unlock: rent, fuel, insurance, utilities, wallet, EMI, gold and international spends don’t count (most also earn no coins since the Feb 2026 revision). And coins are travel-locked — 5 coins = ₹1, redeemable on Scapia-app bookings.

Forex · Ad spend

For real forex, Magnus beats 0%

Above ₹1.5L/mo, Magnus earns ~14% in miles; even after its 2% markup that’s ~12% net. Scapia’s 0% forex saves the fee but earns zero coins on international spends — use it only for small amounts where points don’t matter. In a month Magnus won’t cross ₹1.5L, HSBC Premier (0.99% markup, ~5.4% via Accor) quietly beats Magnus’s below-threshold 4.8%.

Ad spend splits: INR Google/Meta billing → Magnus (if MCC allows); USD SaaS like AWS → treat as International above.

Gold + Groceries

One ICICI EPM iShop pool

Buy the voucher on iShop (that’s where the ~15–18% is earned), then spend it. Nykaa currently works for gold alongside Flipkart and Amazon — verified on the live portal at the time of writing. Gift-card bullion rules change without notice, so test a small voucher before a large buy. Some brands (Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy) deduct a ~2.5% processing fee on voucher purchases — net it off the headline rate.

Two caps. A voucher must be spent in one transaction (no carry-forward), so ~₹25k/order earns the boosted rate. Gold sits in the Flipkart+Amazon+Nykaa sub-caps; fill the rest of the shared pool with grocery vouchers. Verify live iShop rates.

Insurance · School fees · Utilities · Fuel

Drive Amex Platinum Travel to ₹7L — then stop

These earn no useful direct points — their whole value is the milestone ladder (revised 9 March 2026): ₹1.9L → 7,500 · ₹4L → 10,000 · ₹7L → 22,500 pts + a ₹10,000 Taj voucher (~₹30–40,000 all-in). Fuel + utilities + education alone clear ₹7L here, so insurance can sit on HSBC at 6%. If they fall short, move insurance onto Amex until ₹7L is hit, then send the rest to HSBC.

After ₹7L these earn nothing on Amex — push extra elsewhere. Watch convenience fees: at HPCL pumps Amex charges 0% under ₹5,000 per fill and 1% above, so split big fills; some school portals surcharge ~1.5–2%, which eats into the ~4–5.7% milestone value. Acceptance varies (some decline Amex), so keep a fallback card. If the iShop pool has headroom, HPCL fuel vouchers on iShop earn ~18% — but they eat the same pool as gold and groceries.

If you’re tracking short of ₹7L, don’t force it. Feed this milestone only with spend that earns ~0 anywhere else (fuel, utilities, fees). Moving ₹3L of shopping off Magnus to hit ₹7L costs you ~₹42k in miles to gain a ~₹19k milestone bump — a losing trade. Landing at the ₹4L tier is fine; never manufacture spend for it. One legit top-up: income-tax (not GST) overflow can push you to ₹7L if fuel/utilities/education fall short — it earns only ~2.3% on BizBlack anyway, and only via a gateway that takes Amex (Canara). GST can’t (Amex isn’t accepted there); never route past ₹7L.

Luxury spends

Amex Platinum Charge — held for the perks

Reward Xcelerator pays 20X at Darveys/RAS and 10X at Air India, Tata CLiQ Luxury, Zoya, L’Occitane — no cap, MR moving 1:1 to Marriott. But see the tally: at the sample luxury spend the points barely clear the ~₹78k fee. You hold this card for unlimited Priority Pass, four hotel statuses and FHR — whose breakfast, upgrades, credits and late checkout Amex pegs at ~₹40k per top-tier stay if you use them — not the points.

Gold/silver coins on Tata CLiQ earn nothing here; Air India bonus only on its own site/app; foreign-currency spends are excluded from Xcelerator.

Shopping · Dining · default

Axis Magnus Burgundy — know its blind spots

Your catch-all for clean discretionary spend: ~14% in miles above ₹1.5L/mo, 4.8% below. With shopping at ₹2L, your Magnus spend is ~₹4.2L/month — so most of it lands in the 14% tier.

Earns zero on: fuel, insurance, gold, utilities, government/tax, wallet, EMI and rent — and those are stripped out of the ₹1.5L threshold. The 14% tier is also capped at your credit limit + ₹1.5L/month, so make sure the limit is ≥ ~₹2.7L or the excess drops to 4.8%. Accor, Marriott and Qatar transfers were removed on 2 April 2026 — value now flows through airline miles (Air India, KrisFlyer, Aeroplan, Flying Blue at 5:4; the new BA / Finnair / Lotusmiles are a weak 5:2). Transfers are also capped yearly: ~10L points total, only ~2L to Group A partners — at heavy spend, plan the burn.

Status holds, not spend targets

Rent, wallet & Marriott Bonvoy

Use rent only for interest-free float or HRA receipts (RedGiraffe), and wallet only to nudge a milestone. Marriott Bonvoy is a ₹3,000 hold for Bonvoy status + one anniversary free night — never route spend to it (tax, rent, fuel, EMI and wallet are excluded anyway).

Stacking & bonus points — what actually works

Gift cards aren’t a double-dip

You earn on buying the voucher (iShop / SmartBuy accelerated), not on spending it — so the play is routing the earn to the voucher purchase. That’s already your gold and grocery route.

Real stack: in a gift-voucher sale, a discounted voucher plus the accelerated earn on it. But a sale-time “instant card discount” needs a direct swipe — so you get the instant discount or the voucher route, rarely both. Take the higher one.

Transfer chains are mostly a myth

Miles and hotel points are one-way — once transferred out you can’t move them again or hop between unrelated programmes.

The one real chain: card points → Marriott → airline (Marriott feeds ~40 airlines at 3:1, with a bonus per 60k) — can edge out a direct card→airline transfer. Verify the live ratio first.

Watch for limited-time bonus points. Issuers keep running short campaigns — festive 5X/10X, milestone boosters, “spend ₹X get Y points,” Amex Offers, SmartBuy/iShop bonus days. They’re time-boxed and usually need you to enrol before spending; a good one beats your normal routing for that window, so check the card app before a big spend.

Booking flights & hotels — earn and burn

Two separate questions: which card to pay with (to earn), and which points to burn for an award ticket or free stay.

Flights — paying for the ticket

Book in the HSBC app portal — ~32% ceiling · Accor

HSBC’s “Travel with Points” portal earns 6X (~18 pts/₹100) on flights; at Accor 1:1 (~₹1.8/pt) that’s ~32% back — the best flight rate in your wallet. Priced in INR (no forex), with best-price guarantee and price-drop protection.

Two hard limits. The 18,000-point cap is on the bonus (5X) points, base uncapped — so the boosted rate covers roughly ₹1.2L of flight spend/month (at ~15 bonus pts/₹100); above that you keep only base ~3%. And you earn it only by booking in the HSBC app — a normal swipe on the airline site earns base. Confirm the live cap definition before a large booking.

Runners: Magnus Travel EDGE ~24% (up to ₹2L/mo); Amex Charge 10X on Air India (~18%, on AI’s own site).

Flights — burning points for an award seat

Domestic business on Air India

Transfer Axis EDGE → Air India Maharaja Club (5:4) and book domestic business class — often the sweet spot for your Magnus points, and one of the few partners left after the April 2026 cull.

Also: Amex MR → airline partners at 2:1 (weaker than Marriott, so keep MR for hotels where you can).

Hotels — paying for the stay

Book in the HSBC app portal — ~65% ceiling · Accor

Same portal earns 12X (~36 pts/₹100) on hotels; at Accor 1:1 (~₹1.8/pt) that’s ~65% back — potentially your highest-earning lane, if you redeem through Accor, for any hotel you’d pay cash for anyway.

Same limits, and it’s Accor-only. The 18,000-pt/month cap means ~₹50k of hotel spend earns the boosted rate; book in the HSBC app, not on the hotel site. The ~65% is real only if you redeem at an Accor property (Sofitel, Novotel, Fairmont) — it’s worth nothing if you prefer Taj or Oberoi.

Hotels — burning points for a free stay

Four ways to spend points on a room

Amex MR → Marriott 1:1 — best for aspirational Marriott / Taj-partner stays.
HSBC RP → Accor 1:1 — for Accor properties (Sofitel, Novotel, Fairmont).
HDFC BizBlack pts → SmartBuy — book hotels on HDFC’s portal with points.
ICICI EPM pts → iShop “Travel & Stays” — EPM’s own portal at ₹1/pt (not SmartBuy, which is HDFC-only).

Airport meet & greet — who actually has it

Complimentary — on three of your cards

ICICI EPM — 2/year, select international airports.

Amex Platinum Charge — 4/year (1 per quarter), 17 airports — but only when the flight is booked through Amex Travel (₹1L+ ticket).

Axis Magnus Burgundy — 4/year. The Burgundy variant keeps it; the plain Magnus lost it in 2024.

Not complimentary

HDFC BizBlack — concierge can arrange it, but you pay; it isn’t free.

HSBC Premier, Amex Platinum Travel, Scapia and Marriott Bonvoy don’t include it.

Caps, timing & the tally

The two things that quietly cost you: hitting a cap without switching, and swiping a card in a category it doesn’t reward.

Scapia

Not shown: one-time welcome bonuses land on top in year one (e.g. HSBC Premier’s ~20,000 points, ~₹36,000 via Accor).

Statement dates & paying on time

Put eight cards on one clock, and never take a late hit

1Align every statement date to one day (say the 1st). Ask each issuer to set the same statement date, so all eight cards bill on one clock — one day to reconcile, one to pay, nothing missed. It also lines up the cycle caps (BizBlack 5X, HSBC’s ₹1L bucket, Scapia’s ₹20k) with Magnus’s calendar-month ₹1.5L threshold, so “have I hit the cap?” becomes a single question. (Not every issuer lets you pick the date, and it concentrates your outflow into one liquidity day.)
2Pay ~7 days before the due date — and manage utilization. Paying early buffers against processing delays so you’re never marked late, the single biggest score factor. The lever most people miss: banks report your balance to the bureau around the statement date, not the due date — so on a card carrying a big balance vs its limit (e.g. ₹10L of tax on BizBlack), make a part-payment before the statement generates so a lower balance gets reported.
3Set full-amount autopay, then track in one app. Bank auto-debit for the total due is the only thing that guarantees you never miss; use CRED or any bill tracker on top for due-date visibility and reminders. Keep it separate from the cap tracker above — one watches bills, the other watches caps.
Accounting, delegation & the milestone calendar

Accounting & compliance hygiene

Business payments

Keep the company books clean

For GST, TDS, ads, SaaS and business travel, keep the invoice, payment receipt/challan, card statement line and reimbursement entry together. If a personal card pays a company expense, reimburse it formally and consistently.

Ask your CA whether card fees, forex charges and GST on gateway fees are deductible or ITC-eligible in your specific setup — it depends on the invoice and eligibility.

Employee & add-on spend

Control before optimisation

Give each add-on card a purpose, a monthly limit and an owner. Reconcile every statement by person, category and invoice. Disable cash withdrawal; avoid broad discretionary access.

You own the liability even when the team makes the purchase — and delegated spend is still your interest bill if it isn’t paid in full.

Delegating to your team

Who gets which card

Issue add-ons on the card that owns the category

Whoever runs ads / SaaS gets an Axis Magnus add-on; whoever handles fuel, utilities and fees gets an Amex Platinum Travel add-on (their spend feeds your ₹7L). Give finance a BizBlack add-on for tax.

Two can’t be delegated cleanly. Scapia has no add-on facility — keep UPI on your own card. And the HSBC travel portal lives inside your app login, so centralise flight/hotel booking rather than hand it out.

Keeping it clean

One instruction beats ten reminders

Set a standing rule: never pay tax, rent, fuel or wallet on Magnus (all earn zero), and never swipe a physical Amex where a portal or biller works (surcharge risk). Have the EA book all travel through the HSBC app, not airline/hotel sites — that’s where the 32%/65% lives.

Add-on spends post to your statement, so reconcile monthly and confirm each add-on stayed in its lane. Pay in full.

Milestone calendar — different clocks, don’t miss one

Every statement cycle

Scapia ₹20,000. Check a day or two before your cycle date; top up if short to keep next month’s airport perks alive.

Every cycle

Caps reset. BizBlack 5X, HSBC’s ₹1L bucket, HSBC’s 18,000 travel pts and the iShop pool all reset — switch cards once each is used up.

Amex card anniversary

Platinum Travel ₹7L. Pace fuel + utilities + education so you land past ₹7L, not just short — that’s where the Taj voucher sits.

Card anniversary

Magnus ₹30L waives the ₹30,000 fee, and Marriott’s anniversary drops your free night. Track both so neither lapses.

The rules that protect it all

Rules, principles & power moves

The rules that protect all of it

Pay every bill in full. Card interest runs ~40%+ a year and wipes out every reward many times over. If cash flow is tight, use the simplest payment method and skip the points entirely.

Count net, not gross. Subtract the gateway/forex/convenience fee, the annual fee, and the haircut for imperfect redemption before you call something a reward — a headline % is not the return.

Don’t manufacture spend. Use these cards only for real payments you’d make anyway; chasing a milestone with invented spend usually loses money.

Keep the books clean. A clean bank transfer beats a high-reward card payment that creates a tax, GST or reconciliation mess. Save every invoice, challan and statement.

Transfer points only against a booking. Miles and hotel points aren’t cash — and transfers can’t be reversed. Move them to an airline, Accor or Marriott only when the specific flight or stay is in front of you.

Portal rates keep changing. iShop, the HSBC travel portal, Xcelerator and transfer ratios move often — check the live rate before any big buy.

Caps reset each cycle. Once a card hits its cap, switch to the next one for the rest of that cycle.

Where routing and timing actually move the number

1Book all flights & hotels through the HSBC app portal. ~32% on flights, ~65% on hotels via Accor, within the 18,000-pt/month cap. This alone can add lakhs if you travel often.
2Feed Magnus above ₹1.5L/month. The jump from 4.8% to 14% is the biggest lever — concentrate shopping, dining, international and INR ad spend so most of it lands in the accelerated tier.
3Accept that ₹10L/mo tax mostly earns base. Take the 5X slice and HSBC’s ₹1L bucket, but size your BizBlack limit so the rest doesn’t spill onto a card that pays zero on government spend.
4Treat the Platinum Charge as a lounge/status card. Its points roughly cover its ~₹78k fee — the FHR, unlimited Priority Pass and four hotel statuses are the real return, so only keep it if you use them.
5Keep groceries on ICICI, insurance on HSBC. ICICI’s ~18% beats everything for groceries; HSBC’s 6% beats letting insurance feed a milestone you already clear on fuel + utilities + education.
6Don’t swipe into a dead category. Fuel, utilities, gold, wallet and rent all earn zero on Magnus; gold coins earn zero on the Platinum Charge. Match each to the card that actually rewards it.
Verify these before you rely on them

Live portal checks always win over any number here. The best card is the one that gives net value without creating compliance, cash-flow or reconciliation risk.
