Does health insurance cover maternity? Company cover vs a personal policy
A personal health policy usually makes you wait two to four years before it pays for a delivery, and then only up to a limit. A company group policy usually covers maternity from day one. If you are planning a family, that difference matters more than almost anything else in your cover.
We started planning a family. Then we read the policy and found the waiting period.
In short
- Personal policies usually cover maternity only after two to four years, and up to a sub-limit.
- Company group policies usually include maternity from day one.
- Ask by name about newborn cover from day one and complications of pregnancy.
- Group cover ends when you leave the job, so plan a job change and a pregnancy with that in mind.
Does a personal health policy cover maternity?
Often, but only after a waiting period of two to four years, and up to a sub-limit that is often below a private-hospital bill. If maternity is built into the plan, you also pay its share of the premium every year, for a benefit most families use once or twice. Where it is offered as a removable add-on, it can make sense to start its clock early and switch it off afterwards. Our personal health insurance guide covers this in full.
Does company group health insurance cover maternity?
Usually, and usually from day one. A well-designed group policy can cover delivery with no waiting period, and some cover it beyond the second child. Your spouse needs to be on the policy, which means the employer has chosen the ESC or ESCP tier, so check that first.
Group maternity cover still has a limit. It is set by your employer when the policy is designed, and it applies whatever the hospital charges. Any discretionary extra pool your company may hold for large claims does not usually apply to maternity, because maternity limits are set on purpose.
Company cover vs a personal policy, side by side
| Company group policy | Personal policy | |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting period | Usually none | Usually two to four years |
| Limit | Set by the employer | A sub-limit, often below a private-hospital bill |
| Who pays for it | The employer | You, every year, if built into the plan |
| When it ends | When you leave the job | When you stop renewing, or remove the add-on |
What should I ask about before planning?
Two things, by name: newborn cover from day one, and cover for complications of pregnancy. Complications are treated differently from the delivery itself, and a newborn who needs care in the first weeks needs to be covered from birth, not from the next renewal. Ask HR, or read the policy summary, rather than assuming.
What happens if I change jobs during a pregnancy?
Your group cover ends when your employment does, and a new employer’s policy may or may not start straight away. A personal policy bought at that point will usually make you wait years for maternity. If a job change and a pregnancy may overlap, check the start date and maternity terms of the new employer’s policy before you move.
